Good Friday is the Friday before Easter . On this day, Christians commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus . According to the Bible, Jesus was sentenced to death by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate , at the insistence of the Sanhedrin . This punishment was carried out on the hill of Golgotha near the city of Jerusalem .
Meaning
The meaning of the death of Jesus lies in the offer that Jesus brought according to the Gospels. His death is reported in the New Testament seen as a sacrifice. The offerings in the Old Testament must be seen as a foreshadowing or anticipation of the death of Jesus. The sacrificed animals (especially the lambs) already indicated that blood is needed for payment of the debt. John the Baptist Jesus has appointed as the Lamb of God . By his death, Jesus took away the guilt of the shame paid. Because of this, Jesus also Satan overcome. Christians therefore commemorate the redemption from sin and the victory over the devil .
