When a close colleague is brutally assaulted, Detective Inspector John Rebus becomes involved in a case involving a hotel fire, an unidentified body and a night of terror and murder that the country has forgotten. John Rebus is haunted by ghosts from the past. He racks his brains over the mysterious code in his colleague’s black notepad. And it seems that no one wants this mystery solved – maybe not even Rebus.
