History of the World of Tomorrow
History is a long, slow river. Sometimes a sudden rapid emerges. About thirty years ago, waves brought history into a maelstrom, slowly at first, but then faster and faster. The world suddenly invaded our living room. The world became a village and man a world citizen. But many felt more like castaways, floating uncertainly on the current of time because of the new questions to which no clear answer is available.
Can civilizations really clash? Where does this sudden religious revival come from? Should we take the threat of terrorism seriously? Will the world survive humanity? Where are the real rulers? Why do we think the world is unsafe? What future are we heading towards?
The turbulent times are not over yet. That is why we tend to cling to all kinds of lifebuoys. It is therefore no coincidence that the concept of 'identity' has taken such an important place in politics in recent decades.
Fear is certainly a bad guide in turbulent times. Clear thinking is a better guide, because the forces at work now are the same as those of the past. The past will be more present than ever. The history of the world of tomorrow wants to connect today with yesterday and thus give the map with which we find our way in the world of tomorrow, a little more depth.
