Towards the Law: Human Rights in Russia

Russia is a country in crisis. This book by Amnesty International tells the stories: One third of the population lives below the poverty line. Russia has the second highest murder rate in the world. Russia holds the world record for prisoners: almost 1 million. Every 50 minutes someone dies in prison. Every year, 5 million people end up in prison for a shorter or longer period. One in two detainees is mistreated, says the federal ombudsman. Etc. etc.
But there are also hopeful prospects for human rights: Russia has ratified many human rights treaties - more than the US. Russian media openly denounce police violence.
