From the Crusades to World War II, Arabs and Turks were closer to our hearts than, say, Poles or Latvians. It wasn’t always great friendship, but still. Emperor Charles conquered Tunis with our help, but we also taught the Ottomans to paint in a different way.
From Bruges, Brussels, Antwerp and Amsterdam we visited the Moors, Saracens and Ottomans. And of course the reverse was also the case: the Bei of Tunis came to hunt in the Terkamerenbos. Turkish tulips caused the first stock market crash in Amsterdam. Moroccans defended both Brussels and Breda in the Second World War.
