The Road to Mecca

Philosopher and TV producer Jan Leyers explored the current situation in the Islamic world during a long and intensive journey that took him to the gates of Mecca. His journey begins in Cordoba, where he meets a controversial French convert. As he travels further, he passes the sultan's city of Fez, explosive Algiers, Libya, Cairo, Jerusalem, Damascus and Istanbul. In Tehran and elsewhere, he visits Koran schools and mosques, and sometimes has disturbing conversations with imams and ayatollahs, with fundamentalists, liberals and terrorists. Along the way, he discovers what is alive and bubbling in the Islamic world, what unites Muslims and Westerners and where their paths diverge.
