Else Bohler German maid

This famous and beloved novel by Simon Vestdijk is set in the 1930s. Johan Roodenhuis describes his great love for Else Böhler. She is the young German maid of his neighbors, who drives him crazy in a boring neighborhood in The Hague full of well-to-do middle class. When Else returns to Germany, Johan follows her, blinded by love. He soon ends up at a Nazi party where his obsession gets out of hand and the affair escalates.
