1942. In Nazi-occupied Amsterdam, Walter Süskind is appointed head of the Hollandsche Schouwburg. On behalf of the Jewish Council, he arranges for his fellow Jewish citizens to be transported from the theatre to Westerbork, supposedly to work in Germany. But when Walter learns of the fate that awaits them in reality, he decides to play a life-threatening double game. He befriends the high-ranking SS officer Aus der Fünten and at the same time seeks to join the underground movement. Using his position at the theatre, he tries to save a large number of children from certain death. As the raids increase and the net closes in on the Jewish community, Walter risks everything he holds dear.
