Dangerous Reminder

Remi Verwimp (1945-2009) was a driving force in the critical Christian grassroots movement in Flanders for more than thirty years. As a priest and educational theologian, he developed remarkable visions in groups on social themes such as the democratization of the church, right-wing extremism and Islamophobia, the relationship between Christianity and Marxism, active pluralism, the religious character of capitalism, secularization and the importance of philosophical renewal in (Christian) social movements. As an emancipatory education worker, he forged alliances between left-wing Christians, Muslims, Jews, Marxists and freethinkers. Remi Verwimp was moved by the power of contrary stories from the Torah and the Bible and sought connections with the Koran. He was convinced that these philosophical sources can still make an indispensable critical voice resound in the current social debate.
