The Italian Arte Povera artist Michelangelo Pistoletto situates art and the artist in social reality. In 1994 he laid the foundation for Progetto Arte, an art project that can be described as a permanent conversation with the world. In 1996 it was given a physical translation in the Cittadellarte - a contamination between citadel and city. The former represents a closed, protected space, while the latter is a metaphor for dynamics and a complex of relationships with the world. Cittadellarte took concrete shape in an old mill building near the Cervo river in the town of Biella. With a residential programme, a political movement and the design for an alternative economic system, Michelangelo Pistoletto has transformed his artistic trajectory into a broad social project. The MUHKA is now showing for the first time, in close consultation with the artist, a total picture of this initiative, which can be seen as the largest work of art he has ever made. In addition, a number of historical key works by Michelangelo Pistoletto will also be on display at the MUHKA.
