The golden hood
After many journeys, mostly through warm countries, Frank van Rijn has ventured with his inseparable Gazelle into the high and at night very cold Tibet. Although he sometimes feels like 'a tropical bird on the North Pole', this idiosyncratic cyclist, now that he has come this far, does not want to know about giving up.
Aggressive dogs, a tent that turns into an igloo at night, hundreds of kilometers of washboard roads and cobblestone paths, lack of oxygen, a pedal that keeps falling apart, a lot of headwind and a heart that sometimes skips a beat, cannot keep him from his goal, Kathmandu.
Apart from this bit of inconvenience, Van Rijn enjoys his journey, the fantastic Himalayan landscapes, the hospitable people and the mostly blue sky above him, with his ally the sun in it.
On his bicycle, heavily laden with instant noodles, water and extra blankets, he finally reaches the last pass, 5,200 metres above sea level, from where the big descent follows, to the alluring warmth of India.
A book to take with you if you want to cycle through Tibet yourself, but even more so a book that brings the arduous and exhausting, but wonderful journey across the Tibetan plateau into your own living room and spares you the hardships inherent to such a journey.
