A natural seducer who combined charm with ruthless manipulation, Sorge infiltrated the highest levels of German, Chinese, and Japanese society in the years leading up to and during World War II. His intelligence on Operation Barbarossa and Japan’s intention not to invade Siberia was crucial to the Soviet counteroffensive in the Battle of Moscow in 1941, which in turn determined the outcome of the war.
Sorge was exposed as a Soviet spy in Japan in late 1941 and hanged.
