Close to Elsschot
Anyone who thinks they know everything about Willem Elsschot will be surprised. His literary and business archive was recently purchased, which contains many new documents. Beautiful first manuscripts of Het Dwaallicht, for example, in which you can follow the writer in his search for the right words. A moving letter he wrote during the Second World War about food for his family. His menu from a lunch with Churchill. Cunning business letters that demonstrate his adroitness in publicity.
2010 is the year of his fiftieth death anniversary. His hometown Antwerp is full of activities under the name The City of Elsschot. The centerpiece is a large Elsschot exhibition in Het Letterenhuis, from May 30 to the end of December.
The book accompanying the exhibition shows many previously unpublished documents, supplemented with unknown photographs of his family and friends.
