It started with a star: the war diary of a Jewish girl

Helga Weiss started keeping a diary in 1939 as a ten-year-old girl. She wrote about the beginning of the war in her hometown of Prague, where life became increasingly difficult for Jews due to Nazi sanctions. She was no longer allowed to go to school, her father lost his job and more and more family members and friends disappeared. She and her parents were sent to the Theresienstadt ghetto.
