The night fire
When Harry Bosch first started out as a detective, John Jack Thompson took him under his wing and taught him everything he needed to know about the job. His mentor was convinced that there was only one way to be a truly good cop: by taking every case personally and tackling it with dogged determination. When Thompson dies, Harry is approached by his widow, who gives him an old file. It turns out to be a case that Thompson was never able to solve. He had taken the file home with him on the day he retired, against all rules.
To find out why this case bothered Thompson so much, Harry goes to Renée Ballard and asks her to help him solve the cold case. As they work on it, the alarming question arises whether Harry's beloved mentor took the file with him to solve the case during his retirement... or to prevent it from ever being solved.
