Land of the daughters
The Chinese call the Moso region 'the land of daughters'. A unique matriarchal society, where daughters are more important than sons, where there is no word for father and where marriage is seen as something outdated. For example, men and women do not enter into permanent relationships and do not live together. Adults continue to live with their mothers and help care for the children of their resident sisters. The Land of Daughters is the autobiographical story of a girl who grows up in this special society, at the foot of the Himalayas. Namu has a strong will of her own, and when Chinese officials come to the village looking for singing talent, she seizes her chance and does something unforgivable: she leaves her mother's house to discover the world outside the Moso region. The Land of Daughters is a wonderful story, which provides insight into a completely different culture. It is a universal story about mothers and daughters, the struggle that drives them apart and the love that brings them together again.
