Complicit

Jozef Heine, a Jewish painter, is plagued in his later years by remorse about his role in the events in Sabra and Shatila and the death of his first wife, Rachel, who is inextricably linked to them. When he wakes up on his sixtieth birthday with a bad hangover and a devastating pain in his genitals, he fears that the countdown has begun for him. He decides that he will end it all himself at the right moment. But before that happens, he wants to make a clean sweep and give his life a different turn. He will no longer paint pornographic pop art, but real art. He will put an end to his relationship with Julia, the nude model with whom he lives. If necessary, he will return to the Middle East and commit himself to peace. All his good intentions are dashed when he finds Julia's lifeless body at the bottom of the stairs a little later and realizes that he killed her in a drunken stupor. If he doesn't want to spend the last months of his life in prison, he'll have to make her body disappear. For Heine, that's an almost impossible task. And his life doesn't get any easier when he crosses paths with the fugitive Sofie Moons, who has just escaped from prison in Ghent.
