Man of God. God of people: Leuven theologians in conversation with Cardinal Godfried Danneels
Cardinal Danneels has been at the head of the Belgian church as archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels for a quarter of a century this year. A good opportunity for a tribute book, according to the professors of the Leuven Faculty of Theology. All the more so since Godfried Danneels used to teach at the same faculty as a colleague. Their book distinguishes itself from other tributes by the thoughtful choice of subject and elaboration. This 'festschrift' does not consist of separate contributions that have only been brought together by chance. On the contrary, the Leuven theologians opted for a collection in which the articles form a beautiful wreath around a central theme that could also be considered interesting for approach from the various sub-disciplines of current theology.
They have wonderfully succeeded in their intention by focusing on the theme of the relationship between God and man, according to Christian insight. In short: God's 'love of mankind'. An ideal theme, by the way, to honour the jubilee cardinal. After all, in 1978 he chose as his episcopal motto 'the goodness and love of man has appeared' - a quote from Paul's letter to Titus (3:4). A text and a theme that are examined in this book from the perspective of the various sub-disciplines of theology, with many surprising insights as a result. At certain moments, a virtual dialogue even arises with insights that are particularly dear to the cardinal and that he has defended passionately for years as a bishop.
