My father was a priest, my mother a nun
I have always known it in my memory: my father used to be a priest, my mother a nun. And that is how they met, like so many people: at work. When a minister from the abbey of Tongerlo comes to preach in Ostend in 1967, he meets a nun who works as a religious education teacher. She asks him to speak to her students in class. The two continue to write to each other afterwards, innocently at first. But their friendship turns into love. In this book, VRT journalist Koen Wauters records the special love story of his parents. For a long time, he only knew the broad outlines of their meeting, until the discovery of an old folder full of letters changed that. For more than two years, his parents wrote to each other, then as priest and nun. In this book, he tells their story using the beautiful letters. They provide a unique insight into their thoughts and feelings. From the first meeting to the day they got married. About their search for friendship within the boundaries of their calling. About their faith and their doubts. About their unstoppable love. About the freedom that crept into not only their lives at the end of the 1960s, but also into the Church. About their desire for a future together and the many obstacles they had to overcome to achieve this. Koen Wauters is a science journalist at the VRT. He has worked for more than ten years, mainly for Het journaal on television, but also for the various VRT radio networks and for the VRT-NWS website. Before that, he worked for VRTradionieuws. Koen Wauters lives near Mechelen, is married and has three children.
