Bestselling author Pieter Aspe delves into Belgium's colonial past. In France, a pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela is murdered. The penitent turns out to be from Bruges, and so the incomparable commissioner Pieter Van In becomes involved in the murder case. Through the investigation, Van In comes into contact with a well-known Bruges family with a past that dates back to the Belgian colonial era. The recently deceased grandfather was the leader of a mercenary army that had to fight for the independence of the wealthy province of Katanga. Rumor has it that he was more than richly rewarded for his military achievements by the Katangan regime. Yet our hero certainly did not live in great prosperity in Bruges and rather dies in solitude. Then documents surface that mention a treasure of gold. The family's greed knows no bounds... Will the treasure be found and what is the connection with the mysterious murder of the Bruges pilgrim?
