Giften en geven appears one hundred years after the birth and twenty-five years after the death of the writer-philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, a gift to someone who is no longer with us. The publication of the collection indicates that his oeuvre, on the other hand, still exists. Sartre lives, lives on, survives. The plural forms in the title verjaardagen, gifts, gifts refer to the multiple approach. Various elements from Sartre's oeuvre are approached in this book in different ways: philosophically, literary, politically, translationally. The ambiguity of the word gift cadeau en vergif refers to the openness of the book: different and even contradictory views on Sartre's oeuvre are given a place. The collection contains contributions from specialists from Belgium and the Netherlands. The contributions are written in a language that can be understood by a wide audience.
