City of Peace: WWI sites in and around Ypres
Winston Churchill said of Ypres: 'There is no holier place for the British people.' Today, there is no city that is so intensely marked by the Great War. However, most visitors enter the In Flanders Fields Museum and then leave the 'city of peace' and its surroundings. They then ignore a wealth of WWI sites. This book works as a corrective and covers all interesting war sites within a radius of 5 km around Ypres.
Who knows that in Ypres there are two very beautiful cemeteries 'intra muros', and three others a short distance from the Grote Markt? That the 'fortification route', so important during the war, leads you to enchanting places? That somewhere in Ypres there is a magical place where 14 New Zealand Maoris are buried together in a brotherly manner? That 2 km from Ypres there is a mighty beautiful cemetery that is often visited by English schoolchildren for a moving reason?
