Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire
The US government denies in all languages that America is an 'empire'. But in two out of three countries America has military bases; in the last two years two governments have been overthrown by the US and George Bush's goal is to spread freedom 'in every corner of the world', but still: 'we are not imperialists'.
Nonsense, says Ferguson, and in Colossus he provides the convincing substantiation of that judgment. In both economic and military terms, America is the most powerful world empire in history. Although Ferguson is sympathetic to the foundation of the American 'empire' - the free market, independent judiciary and democracy - he is critical of America's tendency to neglect its responsibility. America's shortsightedness could become a great risk to the world.
