On a beautiful winter day, young left-wing politician Merete Lynggaard disappears without a trace. The media pounces on the story and suggests everything from murder and suicide to a planned voluntary disappearance. The police are summoned to investigate the disappearance on a large scale, but Merete has vanished from the face of the earth.
Brigadier Carl Mørck, head of the "unsolved cases" department q, forces a major breakthrough in the investigation after several years. Together with his assistant Assad, he is on the trail of a reckless criminal who is driven by hatred. Revenge turns out to be a crucial factor in the insane plot.
