The first three chairmen of the Foundation for the Promotion of Popular Power in Rotterdam

Mr. HMA Schadee, Mr. Dr. KP van der Mandele and HJE van Beuningen were the first three chairmen of the Foundation for the Promotion of Popular Power. With their pragmatic attitude, these men of cotton provided a blueprint for the way of working that characterizes the almost one-hundred-year-old Rotterdam foundation to this day. They have meant a lot to the city of Rotterdam and the Popular Power of the Rotterdammers. How striking it is that the fourth chair of Popular Power, Mr. G. Chr. Govaert Christiaan Kok (Amersfoort, 15 October 1935 – Rotterdam, 10 March 2021) was a Dutch lawyer and historical publicist.
Kok was the son of the Rotterdam gynecologist Petrus Christianus (Pieter Christiaan) Kok (1906-1998), in turn the son of a teacher at the grammar school in Leiden, and Anna Engelbertha van den Bergh (1911-1997). After graduating from the Erasmiaans Gymnasium, he studied law at Leiden University from 1954. He obtained his master's degree in Dutch law in 1959 and his master's degree in notarial law in 1961. He obtained his doctorate there in 1971 with a thesis on The Dutch notariaat. From 1962 he worked at (the predecessors of) the Rotterdam law and notary firm of NautaDutilh, from 1971 as a notary. In 1976 he became a judge at the Court of Appeal in The Hague, was its vice-president from 1985 and was its president from 1996 to 2001; Between 1989 and 1996 he was president of the court in Den Bosch, after which he returned to the Hague Court of Appeal as president, only to exchange his position there in 2001 for that of judge at that court, a position he held until his retirement in 2005.
