The Century of Belgium
* A comprehensive look at a comprehensive century
*
Political highlights, history of mentalities, everyday life of ordinary people
The approaching end of the century - of the millennium even - invites us to look back. The century of Belgium not only looks for the main moments of the past hundred years, but also has an eye for smaller events. Through all these well-known and lesser-known facts, this publication also aims to reconstruct the spirit of the times. Because history is made by people, an insight that should protect us from all too unambiguous interpretations.
This 'human work' explains why a fever of speculation broke out in the 1920s. It is also understandable why so many people in the 1930s were critical of their own time. Indeed, in 'their' Congo the Belgians also wanted to maintain an apartheid regime. Yes, there was also laughter in the Second World War. No, not every young person was an aspiring revolutionary in the 1960s. And certainly, for the white movement the child murders were only a pretext.
The Century of Belgium aims to be an informative book, to refresh the memory, but also to offer an interpretation and at the same time provide sufficient facts for nuances. Because the truth about history does not exist. A fascinating, multifaceted and critical view does, however.
