The Amulet of Merdur

Yern grows up in a settlement where the strength of a warrior is important. The young man is not the first among his equals, but he is clever and driven. Although he remains a 'stranger' in the village community as an adopted child, he is loved. Certainly by Minaïs, the daughter of one of the village elders. But when Yern and his peers enter the forest for their initiation test to become a warrior, Minaïs is made to understand clearly that not Yern but someone else is destined for her.
