Gender(s): on the construction and deconstruction of gender among Flemish youth

24,99 40,00

Differences between men and women are a popular topic of conversation. In these conversations, the emphasis is often on gender inequality as well as on differences among adults. In this book, we shift the focus to gender differences among young people.
Gender differences are at least partly socially constructed. They are the result of gender socialization, whereby girls and boys are raised to be women and men. Gender practices create differences between boys and girls that cannot be reduced to natural or biological differences. In this book, we pay attention to both processes - gender socialization and gender practices.
This book was coordinated by the Youth Research Platform (JOP). It includes contributions from researchers within the JOP as well as contributions from external researchers. Researchers from various disciplines examine gender differences in Flanders at a young age and the (de)construction of gender boundaries in four domains: culture and leisure; education; political views and well-being.
