1074. Adela, the elderly Countess-Dowager of Flanders, leaves the court of Bruges, where her son Robrecht is in charge. She drives to the town of Meessen in the south of the West Flemish hilly landscape to spend her last years in the local women's abbey. To her surprise, she finds a small trading town in full development, with a very self-assured population. Contact with the free-spirited companion Itta in particular is difficult.
