Puglia, 1945. In a small village, sisters Teresa and Angelina grow up in a poor working-class family. They are different in every way: Teresa is quiet and vulnerable, Angelina is exuberant and shameless. When Teresa and Angelina's father is sent to the front and poverty really takes hold, their beautiful mother Caterina is forced to make a terrible compromise: once a week she goes to the country house of Baron Personè, the powerful landowner.
