Passion Of The Chaplain
Early seventeenth century. Petrus Tyrant is chaplain ad interim of Bollezeele, a village in French Flanders. He falls in love with the notary's daughter Cornelia Brouwers and has an illegitimate son with her, little Petrus. Petrus and Cornelia leave their native region and travel through the country, lying and cheating. They steal and sell church ornaments to stay alive. Time and again Tyrant escapes from the authorities, until he is caught. At the age of 31 he is gruesomely executed on the Grand Place in Brussels. The Passion of the Chaplain is a book for amateurs and insiders, for historians and literature lovers. A real picaresque novel with a dissolute Flemish priest-thief in the lead role. A book for those who want to know the historical truth and like to see it drenched in a romantic sauce. Bonnie and Clyde, against the background of the turbulent and harsh seventeenth century.
