Tea 77
At Theet 77 in Hamme, East Flanders, the cattle dealer family Brusselmans lives and works: the mother, the father, their two sons and their daughter. One son, Herman Brusselmans, seems destined to become both a footballer and a drummer, but these disciplines end up in dead ends. The true destiny of this Hamme native leads to writing.
After more than eighty books, both acclaimed and reviled, Brusselmans feels it is high time to write the novel Theet 77, which has long lingered in his mind. He looks back at a youth that shaped him, and which already carries the writing within it at an early age, and in the ever-faster successive years the influence of and thoughts about Theet 77 are never far away. The adult looks back, meanwhile lives his life as an author, lover, friend, and ex-Theetenaar, and at the right moment the first sentence of Theet 77 finally appears on paper.
Brusselmans evokes what goes on around this place, and gives leading roles to the family members and supporting roles to various people, animals, things and events. It is a feast for the reader, full of recognition, homesickness and memories of what has been and will continue to exist thanks to memory and fantasy. Theet 77 is great literature.
