Hugo Raes (1929) made his debut in 1964 with the poetry collection Jagen en gejaagd worden (Being Hunted), followed by his debut novel De vadsige koningen (The Vagrant Kings) in 1961, which made him one of the best-known - and most controversial - Flemish authors in one fell swoop. He also became one of the most widely read writers in the Netherlands.
In addition to realistic work (besides The Sluggish Kings including A Faun with Cold Horns) Raes also wrote a large number of books belonging to the genre of the fantastic novel, which is rare in Dutch literature. 'Stories' contains a very wide selection from the best that Raes has written in both genres.
