Wild swans
The publication of Wild Swans marked one of the greatest publishing successes of the past decades. After a somewhat slow start, Rudy Kousbroek's declaration of love in NRC Handelsblad changed that, and since then the book has been reprinted dozens of times. Wild Swans was published in Dutch in 1992 and sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. This makes it the best-selling book ever published about China. It offers a panoramic view of three women on a complex society in the form of beautiful memoirs, intimate portraits and a compelling chronicle of twentieth-century China. Despite the almost unimaginable horrors that befell Jung Chang and her family, Wild Swans is an impressive testimony to optimistic belief in a just society with equal rights and opportunities for everyone.
