In the autumn of 1997, publisher Meulenhoff and the Belgian daily newspaper De Morgen organised a story competition, in which everyone, professional writer and amateur, could participate. The latter category in particular had a great success: of the total of 580 submitted stories, the vast majority appeared to have been written by amateurs. The fifteen best stories were collected in Moed en overmoed and provide a sample of literary talent in Flanders.
