When writer Owen Quine goes missing, his wife Cormoran decides to call Strike. Quine is often away from home, but this time it is different. Strike soon discovers that the disappearance has everything to do with Quine's latest manuscript. This consists of revealing portraits of almost all of his friends and acquaintances and it would be a disaster for them if it were ever published.

Not long after, Quine is found murdered. The circumstances of his death are highly suspicious and provide a disturbing glimpse into the mind of the perpetrator. Strike and Robin find themselves in a race against time to find a killer who turns out to have a very unique profile…
