The last command
During a cruise on the Mediterranean, Pieter Van In, Hannelore Martens and Guido Versavel are confronted with the worrying disappearance of Bart Vernieuwe. When a search on board yields nothing, it is assumed that Vernieuwe has drowned. It is not immediately clear whether it is murder or suicide, until Van In discovers that Willem Debaes, Bart Vernieuwe's father-in-law, drowned six months earlier in the swimming pool of an empty villa. The investigation takes Van In from Barcelona to Cannes, Florence, Rome Alicante, Gibraltar and Lisbon back to Flanders, where he contacts the victim's family and the ambiguous Alain Dekyvere, chief inspector with the local police. All clues lead to a real estate operation on the outskirts of Brussels that has gotten out of hand. But is Van In on the right track? And what role does Kim Debaes, Willem Debaes' daughter and Bart Vernieuwe's widow, play?
