Every five years, passion plays are performed in the open-air theatre De Doolhof in Tegelen (the Netherlands). This large-scale cultural and religious event will take place again in 2015. The author of the passion play that will be performed then is poet and writer Patrick Lateur. He places a few accents that are surprisingly current. For example, the author sees Simon of Cyrene as an immigrant from North Africa. And the Jewish background of the story is explicitly present in texts and songs from the Old Testament. But the biggest intervention concerns the not unimportant role that Mary Magdalene is given. The women must also have experienced the entry into Jerusalem and the farewell meal. And so they are given a place in the passion play. Patrick Lateur frames the story of Golgotha with the story of Easter. The resurrection is the big framework, suffering and death are, as it were, one big flashback. Jesus' performance started a new movement in Galilee and beyond. This thought of the spring of Galilee is a not unimportant element in this passion play.
