1927. The young Russian writer Stepan Radek flees his native country and immerses himself in the bohemian life of Paris. There he meets the enigmatic Russian general's son Alexei, who is fascinated by dancers and ballerinas and would seem to be a dancer himself if he were not crippled. Stepan becomes fascinated by Alexei's strange relationship with Nina, a star dancer of the Ballets Russes. Nina comes from the Russian proletariat. As a child, she learned her first dance steps from...Alexei. Their bizarre relationship is driven by fascination, mutual dependency and hatred.
