Are civilizations clashing?
Twenty years after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Civilizations Clash? reflects on the social polarization that has escalated considerably since then. Bart De Wever and Khalid Benhaddou set out to find an answer to the question of whether civilizations clash. And if they do, what , is there still a future perspective?
The polarization between Christianity and Islam is a reason and a stepping stone to also investigate in other domains how polarized the public debate is conducted there. De Wever and Benhaddou do not spare sacred cows. Themes such as integration, identity, freedom of expression and woke culture, fake news and social media, globalization and migration, and climate are discussed. Each of these domains in which the fault lines are very visible and in which many people experience fundamental unrest and discomfort.
Is our identity still strong enough to come to a solution? And what does such a solution entail? Is it a package of rules and laws? Shouldn't a society have its own problem-solving capacity? Where do the answers lie towards unification between different people and different groups? Is there even a narrative and a basic story? Or is fatalism taking over completely?
