When ninety-two-year-old Cyriel Van Daele realizes that his stay in the Fortuna care center is more like hell than the heaven he had imagined, he starts writing in an attempt to maintain his dignity. The early loss of his mother, the ambivalent relationship with his father, his turbulent love life, his missed fatherhood, the horror of the war and the many experiences of loss are part of his family portrait.
