The borrower

Lucy Hull works as a librarian in a small Missouri town. By accident, she kidnaps her favorite bookworm, ten-year-old Ian Drake. He convinces Lucy to take him in her car on an adventure, into the big wide world, far away from his overprotective, strictly religious mother who has enrolled him in an anti-gay course. Along the way, Lucy tries to make peace with her father, who fled his Russian homeland years ago, and she wonders why she was apparently so eager to escape her own existence.
