Why did the man who preached nonviolence meet such a violent end? That is the question Koenraad Elst is looking for an answer to, fifty years after the events. How much did the Mahatma not mean to his people? He had taken up the gauntlet against the British colonizer, had worked to bridge the caste differences, had tried to make Muslims and Hindus live together peacefully... But despite his good intentions, his actions degenerated into bloody violence. His political final victory, the independence of India in 1947, was thoroughly spoiled by the Partition of the country, from which the Muslim state of Pakistan was carved.
