The Flemish Republic From Utopia to Project: Thought Trails to Flemish Independence
Now that the idea of the Belgian division of assets is becoming increasingly realistic, the public debate on the architecture of the future Flemish nation is also urgently needed. And for the authors of this book, it may be more than a minimalist credo on 'good governance'. This is where a fundamental value discussion arises that concerns every citizen. What kind of Flanders is emerging on the horizon in political, cultural, social, economic and ecological terms? Which basic social options are we going for? Inevitably, this is also about identity, self-respect and self-awareness. Are the Flemish people ready for a political-civil élan that can carry a new republican project? What about Wallonia, Brussels, Europe? Time for fresh thinking. In its quest for more democracy, Flanders certainly has a place to conquer in the ranks of autonomously governed European regions that will see the light of day in the 21st century. Ten independent but committed opinion makers from the cultural, academic and media world open the debate on the philosophical and political principles of the Flemish nation-in-the-making. Contributions by Ludo Abicht, Brecht Arnaert, Julien Borremans, Peter De Roover, Koenraad Elst, Matthias Storme, Johan Sanctorum, Jef Turf, Luc van Doorslaer. With an introduction by Eric Defoort, chairman of the Flemish People's Movement.
