In recent years, Mark van Tongele's work has moved from the margins to the centre of the literary field. His previous collections were reviewed in all quality newspapers and awarded the Poetry Prize of the Province of Antwerp. Few, however, know the great coherence within his work. For the first time, everything is brought together here: from the 'DNA' of his poetry (in Relikwieën van ritm), via the Zij gedichten to a completely new collection: Zonnezucht. Mark Van Tongele (1956) is considered an insider tip of Dutch-language poetry from Flanders. He is the 'composer with the broadest sound register among Flemish poets' (Paul Demets), a poet who combines a love of language with a love of life. Van Tongele is above all an oeuvre builder, an opus poet, the 'designer of a now impressive body of language that has been presented in a serial context in recent years' (Yves T'Sjoen). This book brings together Van Tongele's widely published work for the first time: from the previously unpublished Relikwieën van rithm and the collection Zij gedichten (1994) to Vaderlatingen (1997) and the four collections (Lopend licht, Ochtendrood en co, Taalwaterval and Luchthonger) that Van Tongele published between 2001 and 2004. With the previously unpublished, new collection Zonnezucht, the eight-part cycle that the poet worked on for over twenty years is (for the time being) completed. Only when reading the whole does it become clear how strong the coherence is between these poems. An obsessive elaboration of a few thematic cores, with recurring key elements such as the sun, light and death, forms the DNA of this poetry. In all of this, Van Tongele is also a poet of language. By disrupting the language he gives possible meanings plenty of room, by deforming words he charges them with new meanings, in his play with punctuation, hyphenation, neologisms and other surprising linguistic discoveries he says more than ordinary words can.
