On the eve of her name ceremony, Mosje is on the threshold of adulthood. As a Valley dweller, you only count if you have proven yourself. After all, life in the Valley is hard and uncertain. The doom of the Old People always hangs over this seemingly idyllic place. Under the permanent threat of the forest, there is no room for weakness and superstition. The headmen and their border guards ensure that the rules are followed. But when a classmate of Mosje disappears, the question soon arises whether all threats really come from outside. While Mosje tries to unravel the secrets, she also struggles with her place in the group. Who is she? What is she worth? What happened to her parents? Who can she trust? And is being in love the same as love? The world she has known all her young life turns out to be built on shifting sand.
