Seaspiracy
Last week my youngest son was talking about the future of the oceans and told us to watch a documentary on Netflix called Seaspiracy.
This has been on my list to watch for a while but I never got around to it. We watched this documentary 3 days ago and if after watching this documentary you don't stop and/or think about it, then there is something wrong with you.
Plastic pollution is a huge problem for our oceans, but what I found astonishing is that it only makes up a small % of the fact that we are helping the oceans to "go to hell". The other % is mainly commercial fishing! If we continue like this, there will be little to no fish left by 2050. Can we do anything about it? Yes, eat less to no fish so that the oceans can recover. That is the only way (and it is still possible) to turn the tide and turn our backs on the billion dollar business of commercial fishing.
At the end you will find the official trailer of this documentary. But if you have Netflix, you only have to type in the title.
What is The King of Books doing about this?
Well, as a person, my wife and I are going to eat less fish and go more vegetarian. We also pay attention to what we buy. Where it is produced. For example, I have been buying sneakers made from recycled material since last year. They fit perfectly and give me just as good a feeling as my expensive Dsquared2.
As a small online book business, I will be replacing my poly bubble packaging with recycled cardboard packaging.
Am I going to save the world with this? Probably not on my own, but if I do it and there are others who follow, we will be able to do this.
We need to start realizing that we need to start living differently. Healthier, calmer. Think before we buy something and then decide to return it because we suddenly don't feel like reading the book or realize that we don't really need that rug.
Now, I do have confidence in it because when I look around at the youth, a large part of the youth is consciously occupied with this problem. The youth does not always buy new. I regularly see them rummaging around in thrift shops and second-hand stores, where they give articles a second life. I admire this.
If we can remember something positive from this COVID19 period, it is that we can also manage with less. We do not have to make long journeys, while mountain biking 2 km away in the forest is also fun. And there are many examples. The only thing I (and many others) miss are the cozy gatherings, restaurants and bars, hugging, ... But fortunately we will do this again soon. Only I think that we will have to adjust our behavior in the future if we want to stay on top of viruses.
